Read the complete UPSC CSE Mains Indian Language Nepali syllabus paper 1 and 2 in English. The qualifying paper on Indian Languages will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard. In IAS Mains Indian Languages, The marks obtained in this paper will not be counted for ranking. The aim of the Indian Languages paper is to test the candidates’ ability to read and understand serious discursive prose and to express his clearly and correctly, in English and Indian Language concerned. In Optional Languages the Minimum marks needed is 30%. (Union Public Service Commission Commonly Known as UPSC says, the papers of Essay, General Studies GS and Optional Subject of only such candidates will be taken cognizance who attain 30% marks in Indian Language and 25% marks in English as minimum qualifying standards in these qualifying papers.)

- History of the origin and development of Nepali as one of the new Indo Aryan Languages.
- Fundamentals of Nepali Grammar and phonology :
(i) Nominal forms and categories:—
Gender, Number, Case, Adjectives, Pronouns, Avyayas
(ii) Verbal forms and categories:—
Tense, Aspects, Voice, Roots and Fixes
(iii) Nepali Swara and Vyanjana;
- Major Dialects of Nepali
- Standardisation and Modernisation of Nepali with special reference to language movements (viz. Halanta Bahiskar, Jharrovad etc.)
- Teaching of Nepali language in India—Its history and development with special reference to its socio-cultural aspects.
Section B
- History of Nepali literature with special reference to its development in India.
- Fundamental concepts and theories of Literature: Kavya/Sahitya, Kavya Prayojan, Literary genres, Shabda Shakti, Rasa, Alankara, Tragedy, Comedy, Aesthetics, Stylistics.
- Major literary trends and movements—
Swachchhandatavad, Yatharthavad, Astitwavad, Ayamik Movement Contemporary Nepali writings, Postmodernism.
- Nepali folklores (the following folk-form only)—Sawai, Jhyaurey, Selo, Sangini, Lahari.
