Alternations in Gastrointestinal Functions Medical MCQ Test

The gastrointestinal (GI) system primarily serves to digest and absorb nutrients from the food we consume. Chronic inflammation of the stomach lining is known as gastritis, often resulting in discomfort. Hydrochloric acid (HCl) in the stomach plays a vital role in killing harmful bacteria and aiding protein digestion. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) commonly manifests as heartburn. The gallbladder stores and releases bile to aid digestion, while ulcerative colitis causes painful ulcers in the colon or rectum. Amylase is responsible for breaking down carbohydrates in the small intestine, where most nutrient absorption occurs. The large intestine primarily absorbs water and electrolytes. Chronic use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is a risk factor for peptic ulcers. Lactose intolerance often leads to abdominal pain and diarrhea after consuming dairy products. Ghrelin, known as the “hunger hormone,” stimulates appetite. Peristalsis refers to the rhythmic muscle contractions that propel food through the digestive tract. The liver detoxifies the blood and processes toxins. Lastly, the pancreas plays a crucial role in producing digestive enzymes and insulin to regulate blood sugar levels.
